Water

The Water shelf answers the most urgent question in any outage: what’s in the house to drink? A household can go weeks on short food. Water is measured in days. This shelf covers storing it, filtering it, and catching it — sized for a home, where a backpacking filter is a backup, not a plan.

What belongs on this shelf?

  • Storage — stackable containers, 55-gallon barrels, and the bathtub bladders that turn a tub into 65 gallons the day a storm is forecast.
  • Filtration and purification — countertop gravity filters, under-sink systems, and the chemicals and tablets that make stored or gathered water safe.
  • Rain collection — barrels, diverters, and first-flush setups for the garden and, with proper treatment, the house.
  • Moving water — pumps, siphons, and spigots. Fifty-five gallons in a barrel you can’t pour from is a decoration.

What actually matters when you buy?

Gallons per person per day — at least one. Drinking plus a bare minimum for cooking and hygiene. Two is comfortable. Hot climates and active work push the number up; our calculator adjusts for both.

Where it physically fits. Water weighs 8.34 pounds a gallon. A month for a family of four is roughly 120 gallons — close to half a ton. Containers that stack, and a floor that can take the weight, matter more than brand names.

What the filter actually removes, in writing. Bacteria, chemicals, and viruses are three different claims. We read the test standards a filter is rated against, not the box art.

The common mistakes

  • Counting the water heater and toilet tanks as the plan. They’re a bonus of a day or two, not a supply.
  • Storing water and never rotating it. Stored water should be swapped about every six months; a date on the container makes it happen.
  • Filtering without storing. A filter needs a source; in a dry outage the source may be exactly what’s missing.

Start with the numbers

The water storage calculator turns your household, your days, and your climate into gallons — then into containers, barrels, or cases, with the weight included so you can plan where it goes. Water is week one of the first-month guide, because everything else waits on it.
