The Home shelf is the house itself: staying warm, cooking real food, seeing after dark, and the garden and preserving work that stretch every other shelf further. It’s the least gadget-shaped shelf and the one that decides whether a long outage is an inconvenience or a miserable week.
What belongs on this shelf?
- Heat — indoor-safe heaters, the fuel math behind them, and the room-sealing basics that make a small heater enough.
- Cooking — camp stoves and outdoor cooking that work when the electric range doesn’t, plus the pantry skills that turn stored staples into meals.
- Light — lanterns and lighting that run a house for evenings on end, not just a tent for a weekend.
- Garden and preserving — seeds that store well, and canning and dehydrating gear that turn a garden surplus into next winter’s food shelf.
What actually matters when you buy?
Safety ratings in writing. Indoor heating and cooking live and die on carbon monoxide. We only cover gear with clear indoor-safety ratings where indoor use is claimed, and we say plainly which gear is outdoor-only.
Fuel you can actually store. A heater is a plan for as long as its fuel lasts. We count burn time per tank or per pound, and how that fuel stores over years, not weeks.
Seeds by germination, not by artwork. For stored seed, what matters is the packed-for date, the storage conditions, and realistic germination rates a year on — the things owner feedback actually reports.
The common mistakes
- Heating the whole house in your head. One warm room, doors closed, blankets out: a small heater does that for days on the fuel a whole-house plan burns in hours.
- Buying garden gear before food storage. A garden pays off in seasons. The pantry pays off this month. Order matters.
- Light as an afterthought. One lantern per living space, plus headlamps for hands — an outage household runs on light more than on almost anything else.
Where this shelf fits
Home is week four of the first-month guide — after water, food, and a power plan, because it builds on all three. The food storage calculator covers the pantry side; preserving and garden comparisons will judge gear on evidence, cost, owner experience, and fit, like everything else here.
Scored comparisons for this shelf are being built now, starting with indoor-safe heat.
